7 week scan

Today I had my first pregnancy scan and hubby came in with me. It was an internal ultrasound. You can see the little "yolk" sack and the little embryo inside it on the bottom right. He measured it at 43mm and gave the estimated due date of 12 November (my iPhone app wasn't too far off!)

He also showed the heart beat! He pressed some buttons and the screen changed and the little Belly Bean pulsed with the heartbeat. It's little heart rate was 120-140 bpm. There wasn't any sound, so we couldn't listen to it, but WOW! It was really cool!

Afterwards, he told us that we need to visit our GP and get a referral to an obstetrician for the 12 week scan. We could be in Canberra by then! So if anyone can recommend a good obstetrician in the ACT, that would be fantastic.

He also wanted me to come in for one more scan in another 2 weeks. I've been booked in to see the ovary whisperer, so I'll look forward to that. She's really great with any questions you might have, so I'll make sure I'm prepared. Pregnancy ultrasounds don't start until after 8.30am, so I can have a little sleep in.

We were actually charged for this ultrasound ($85), which can be claimed back on Medicare. But I'm sure the other ultrasounds weren't charged? Maybe they were part of the IVF cost? Not sure.

But at least we got to leave with little print outs of the ultra sound. It's real! Little Belly Bean :)

  1. Hey :) My US looked very similar. I saw the HB too and according to measurements had the same EDD 12th Nov.. I'm a bit worried about mine as I'm having some bleeding.... but I have another scan coming up which will hopefully show us more.... Fingers crossed all is good.

I'm so glad everything is going well for you :)

    1. Hey Wishing, This is your first pregnancy isn't it? I don't think I'll be uncrossing my fingers until May. It seems like forever between each blood test and ultrasound, but looking forward to our scan in 2 weeks. Same EDD! Good luck with it all!

  2. Hi MC, I wanted to let you know that I had my pregnancy test last Wednesday 14th. Very happy that we had a result of 352! I have worked out that I am exactly 2 weeks behind you and also had a result of just over 4000 too at the 5 week mark (Monday).
Since then though things have been a bit rocky! I ended up in hospital Tuesday night, with what was originally suspected as an ectopic pregnancy (I was in sooo much pain!!) but scans revealed that I had a burst cyst in my uterus, which was likely to cause me the pain. Apparently reasonably common to have large cysts when having IVF, because of all the hormones, but when they burst...ouch! At this stage an ectopic pregnancy hasn’t been ruled out because they haven’t been able to yet confirm that the sack that they saw in my embryo had a ‘little yolk’ sack in it. I have been very closely monitored by my doctor and the nurses at my facility centre and had more bloods taken this morning. Fingers are crossed that we get good results today and then get to see the ‘little yolk’ sack at our 7 week scan.
Really great that things are going well for you, I hope that I continue to follow in your footsteps

    1. Sunshine? I am so pleased to hear about your positive result!! I was thinking about you and wondering how your cycle went. Funny how the finger crossing doesn't seem to end does it? OMG that cyst must have been scary for you. At least they're keeping a good eye on you. I'm so happy for you! I'll cross my other fingers for you :)

    2. Sorry, no not Sunshine, I last wrote on your '5 Weeks' blog. Had to go back into hospital as a result of these pesky cysts causing me pain (they think they might be so big that they are twisting on themselves, the main concern being that they could cut of blood supply to my uterous) over the weekend, was in there for 3 nights! The hormones they pump into us have a lot to answer for! One positive of being in the hospital was that I got to have another scan, mainly focussed on the cysts, but which showed us an early heart beat:-)
      Enjoy being drug free!

    3. Ruby! Ah yes, the bloating, the injections...First IVF cycle? How great is that? OMG, its crazy to think how long you are actually on drugs for. And it's more amazing how our bodies survive it. I wasn't even aware of getting IVF cysts, must have been terrible. Poor thing! It's amazing seeing that little heartbeat. Congratulations and good luck!
