Meet the baby-makers

Boy meets girl. Boy forgets girl. Then Boy meets girl again.

Our story begins in 1986 and I had just moved with my family to Australia from New Zealand. We were 6 years old. I remember him as a little boy with a blonde helmet head. He couldn't remember me at all. I was the little girl with the afro, surely that's hard to forget! He moved away with his family the next year and I didn't see him again until 1998, my first year out of high school.

Funnily enough we both ended up in the same secretarial class at college. I approached him and asked if he remembered me from Grade One...and he just looked at me blankly. Later he would tell me that he was staring at me wondering why this crazy chick was talking to him. Not the best start to a blossoming romance. But he soon discovered that I was a good friend to have, as I would let him copy my keyboarding class tasks and let him drive my car...and so our adventures began.

I used to work afternoon shifts from 7pm - 11pm. And I would usually find him sitting on the park bench waiting for me when I finished work. He was ready for adventures. Sometimes we would drive to the closest petrol station (15 minutes away) to get ice creams. Sometimes we would drive to the mountains nearby and narrowly miss wombats or kangaroos. Sometimes we'd just walk for hours, and I'd get him to piggyback me. Once he made me go bushwalking through this bush track in the middle of the night, where rapists were rumoured to prey on young women. I screamed a lot and would not let go of him! I think he had secretly planned it that way. We had a lot of fun and it was all very innocent.

As they say, we were joined at the hip. For a long time, people would ask if there was something going on between us. But there wasn't. I was just enjoying our friendship. He would sometimes stay over night at my house and watch videos (yes, before DVDs and bluray). I was still living at home at the time. My parents would come home in the morning after finishing night shift and find us asleep on the living room floor (sometimes in my bedroom - but always fully clothed!) Then one day my mother said to me, "You're father thinks you're having relations with that young boy." I was so horrified! I gasped my reply "Ew! NO! GROSS!" That story still makes me giggle.

And then our relationship just naturally evolved. He would grab my hand while we rollerbladed along the Newcastle foreshore and we just wouldn't let go. We would sit on the giant tree stump where I would lean into him, and we would stay like that for hours. Sometimes we would talk. Sometimes we wouldn't. A lot of the time I would fall asleep on him. But we would always laugh.

Then one night during one of our adventures, I fell asleep in the car. When I woke up we were kissing. I blame him for starting it and he blames me. Seven years later he asked me to marry him. And I said, "Yes."

Honeymoon is over, baby...

My husband and I feature as the main characters in my blog, Mr. and Ms.Conception (or Mr.C and Ms.C)

We hit the baby making trail back in November 2008, and tried to conceive naturally for a year.

In early 2010, we had our first appointment with the fertility specialist. We had numerous tests done. Mr.C had bloodwork and semen analysis. I had blood work, ultrasound and an HSG and the doctor told us "there is absolutely no reason why you can't fall pregnant." And we were diagnosed with unexplained infertility.

We tried two failed IUIs.

In November 2010, I started seeing a naturopath. I continued to see her for 9 months, but didn't get any results.

In July 2011, we headed back to the fertility centre. We tried two more failed IUIs. Both were stimulated cycles on Femara. After my last (cancelled) IUI, the doctor suggested I try IVF.

In December 2011, I went to see an acupuncturist. They are a husband and wife team, and they are brilliant. They have been incredibly helpful through my first IVF cycle.

In January 2012 we started our first IVF cycle…and got our first positive pregnancy test!

Now, read on...and enjoy the blog.

You've come a long, long way together...

November 2012 : I am proud to announce the arrival of our little boy! He is just perfect!
